“Bisexuality”.. The Olympic Committee issues a statement regarding the “controversial” Algerian boxing
The International Olympic Committee issued a statement condemning the harassment of Algerian boxers Imane Khelif and Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting during their participation in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The International Olympic Committee confirmed the validity of their participation and the poor procedures of the International Boxing Federation, which is currently not recognized, in dealing with the file of their exclusion from the 2023 World Championships.
The text of the Olympic Committee’s statement is as follows:
Everyone has the right to practice sports without discrimination.
All athletes participating in the boxing competitions at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games comply with the rules of participation and all medical regulations set by the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit, and the gender and age of all athletes are determined based on their passports.
The rules also apply during the qualifying stages, including the 2023 European, Asian, Pan American and Pacific Games boxing competitions, the African Qualifying Championships in Dakar (Senegal) and the two World Qualifying Championships in Busto Arsisio (Italy) and Bangkok (Thailand) in 2024, which saw the participation of 1,471 boxers from 172 National Olympic Committees, the Refugee Boxing Team and the individual neutral team, with more than 2,000 qualifying events.
The Paris Boxing Unit has adopted the Tokyo 2024 Olympic Boxing Rules as a cornerstone for the development of the Paris 2024 rules, to minimise the impact on athletes’ preparations and ensure consistency between Olympic Games. The Tokyo 2020 rules build on the previous Rio 2016 rules, which were in place before the International Olympic Committee suspended AIBA in 2019 and withdrew its recognition in 2023.
We have seen misleading information in reports about two female athletes competing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, who have previously competed in several world boxing championships over many years in the women’s category, including the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and the AIBA World Championships.
The two athletes were victims of a surprise decision by the International Boxing Federation near the end of the 2023 World Championships, and were suddenly excluded without any action.
According to the AIBA website, the decision was taken by the AIBA General Secretary and CEO unilaterally, and was later ratified by the AIBA Board of Directors, who only requested that procedures be established for similar cases in the future in the AIBA Rules, which should “establish clear procedures for gender testing.”
The current attack on these two athletes is based on this decision alone, which was not taken with proper procedures, especially considering that the duo have competed at the highest levels for many years.
This approach is the antithesis of good management.
!
The rules of participation should not be changed during an ongoing tournament, and any rule changes should follow a sound process and be based on scientific evidence. The IOC is committed to protecting the human rights of all athletes participating in the Olympic Games in accordance with the Olympic Charter, the IOC Code of Ethics and the Strategic Framework for Human Rights.
The Olympic Committee is saddened by the harassment directed at the two players at this time.
AIBA’s recognition was withdrawn by the IOC in 2023 following its suspension in 2019, and the withdrawal of recognition was confirmed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). See IOC statement following this ruling.
The International Olympic Committee has made it clear that it needs agreement between national boxing federations on a new international federation for boxing to be eligible for inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games programme.
It is noteworthy that boxer Iman Khalifa qualified for the quarter-finals of the 66 kg boxing competition, after her Italian competitor Angela Carini withdrew after only 46 seconds.
Iman Khalifa’s participation came after much controversy due to demands to exclude her for not meeting the sexual eligibility criteria.
The International Olympic Committee gave the green light for Iman Khalif to participate normally.
Khalif was disqualified from the 2023 World Championships after failing a gender eligibility test.
This is the second participation of boxer Iman Khalif in the Olympics after the Tokyo 2020 edition.
