What do we know about the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh?

According to initial information, Haniyeh was assassinated at his residence in Tehran by a missile launched from the air (Anadolu)

The Islamic Resistance Movement ( Hamas ) announced – this Wednesday morning – the assassination of its political bureau chief, Ismail Haniyeh, after he was targeted in an Israeli raid in Tehran. The Iranian authorities confirmed the assassination and said that they are investigating the circumstances.

How was the assassination carried out?
Hamas announced – in a statement issued at six o’clock this morning, Mecca time – that Haniyeh was assassinated after being targeted in an Israeli raid on his residence in Tehran after participating in the inauguration ceremony of the new president, Masoud Pezeshkian.

Later, the Iranian authorities confirmed the assassination of Haniyeh without clarifying the circumstances of his targeting, and said that they would announce the results of the investigation as soon as possible.

when and where?
The Iranian news agency said that Haniyeh’s assassination took place at around 2 a.m. local time on Wednesday (9:30 p.m. GMT on Tuesday), noting that he was staying at a special headquarters for war veterans in Tehran.

The agency added that Haniyeh was martyred along with one of his bodyguards.

On the other hand, the Iranian Fars News Agency said that Haniyeh’s residence in the northern region of the capital, Tehran, was targeted.

 

What weapon was used in the assassination?
Iranian media reported that Haniyeh was assassinated by a missile fired from one country to another, not from within Iran. In this context, the Nour News website, affiliated with
the Iranian Supreme National Security Council, said that the late Palestinian leader was targeted by a missile fired from the air, indicating that investigations are underway to determine the location from which the missile was fired.

For its part, the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation said that Haniyeh was killed by a missile launched from a country outside Iran, not from Iranian airspace.

For its part, the Israeli army declined to comment on the incident, saying it does not respond to foreign media reports.

Where will Haniyeh be buried?
Hamas said that the funeral of Ismail Haniyeh will be held in Doha with the presence of the people and factions and the participation of Arab and Islamic leaders. It added that the funeral prayer for the deceased will be at the Imam Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab Mosque in the Qatari capital after Friday prayers.
